Born in Sigmaringen, Germany, this Swabian initially gained extensive experience in karting, his first career stop. At the age of 9, he breathed the air of the beginners' class for the first time and went through various championships from 2005 to 2009. His track record was impressive: in the first four years of his engagement, he stood on the podium 81 times, 44 of them on the top step of the winners' rostrum. He won the national championship of the German Motorsport Association (DMV) four times in a row.

in 2009, he ended his career as a kart driver with the championship in the KF2 class, and in the same year, he was able to assert himself at the assessment course for the ADAC Formula Masters, which secured him promotion to this junior series for the following season. Wehrlein's debut year ended in a convincing sixth place overall. In 2011, the Swabian converted the experience he had gained into a superior title win in the ADAC Formula Masters, which allowed him to climb the next rung of the career ladder.

In the 2012 season, he entered the Formula 3 Euro Series in a Dallara-Mercedes of the Mücke Motorsport team. Wehrlein mastered the leap into the highly competitive Formula 3 without any problems, taking nine podium places in his first season in addition to a race win and only just having to admit defeat in the overall standings to the clearly more experienced winner Daniel Juncadella from Spain. In addition, he took fourth place in the Formula 3 European Championship classification, which was partly held in parallel.

Wehrlein initially started in 2013 in the European Formula 3 Championship again, but after an extremely successful start to the season he decided to leave the formula racing profession for the time being and switch to the German Touring Car Masters with an AMG Mercedes C-Coupé DTM from Mücke Motorsport. There, the 19-year-old attracted attention with three tenth-place finishes and his repeatedly sparkling driving skills.

Already in the following season, he started for HWA and established himself in the front third of the starting field. The highlight was the race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, where Wehrlein not only took pole position but also his first victory in the DTM – as the youngest driver in the history of the championship up to that point. The Swabian's exceptional qualities also earned him a test driver contract with the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team.

in 2015, Wehrlein experienced the first really big year of his motorsport career. Already in the penultimate race of the season, he claimed the title of DTM champion in the Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM after two race wins, three further podium finishes and consistent results in the top eight. At the same time, an additional engagement as a test driver in the Formula 1 team Force India increased his chances of a cockpit in Grand Prix racing.

This dream came true for the Swabian right at the start of the 2016 season when he was offered a regular place in the Manor Racing team, whose cars were equipped with a Mercedes-Benz power unit. Wehrlein battled bravely through his debut year in Formula 1 and even secured his first World Championship point with a tenth-place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg.

For the following season, which he was looking forward to with high expectations, the Swiss Sauber F1 Team signed him up. However, after suffering an injury at the Race of Champions, Wehrlein was not able to compete until the third round of the World Championship. An eighth place at the Spanish Grand Prix and tenth place at the race in Azerbaijan earned him a total of five World Championship points and 18th place in the drivers' standings. At the end of the season, his driver's place at Sauber was given to someone else, and since no other Formula 1 team required his services either, the young talent returned to Mercedes-AMG in the DTM in 2018.

There, Wehrlein – back at the wheel of a C 63 DTM – impressed with a third-place finish in the second round at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz and a plethora of other top-10 finishes. In the final classification of the drivers' standings, he occupied eighth position. As Mercedes-Benz's withdrawal from the DTM also meant that the Swabian's driver contract did not get extended, he switched to the promising FIA Formula E at the start of the 2018/19 season, where he competed for the Indian team Mahindra Racing.

In just his second race in the all-electric Formula racer, the ePrix of Santiago de Chile, Wehrlein managed a second place. At the end of the season, he occupied twelfth place in the drivers' championship. He continued to drive for Mahindra the following year, but left the team shortly before the season-ending races in Berlin and joined the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E team at the start of the 2020/21 season.
