As the owner of the Mosau estate near Züllichau in the Prussian province of Brandenburg, von Wentzel-Mosau was passionate about motor sports. He was regarded nationally and internationally as one of the most successful private drivers and relied on vehicles from Benz, Mercedes and Mercedes-Benz. In 1924 and 1925, for example, he won the "Durch Schlesiens Berge" (Through Silesia's Mountains) and "Quer durch Holstein" (Across Holstein) races in Benz touring cars; in 1926, he achieved a class victory in a Mercedes at the Herkules mountain race near Kassel and also a class victory on a Mercedes-Benz at the extremely renowned Ecce Homo mountain race.

In the 1927 season, von Wentzel-Mosau collected a particularly large number of successes. At the hill climb on the Eibsee road near Grainau, at the Guggerberg race near Budapest and at the meetings in La Baule and Boulogne-sur-Mer, as well as at several other events, he mostly achieved class victories. His last outing proved tragic. Von Wentzel-Mosau crossed the finish line at the Stendal kilometre race on 28 April 1929 with the best time of the day, was forced to take hard evasive action immediately afterwards, lost control of his car and was fatally injured in the resulting accident.
