Born in Stuttgart, Christian Werner joined Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in 1911. Initially working as a chauffeur and mechanic, he later advanced to become the driving foreman of the breaking-in department. After the First World War, he established himself as a racing driver who was as talented as he was successful. In 1924, for example, he won the Targa and the Coppa Florio as well as the Semmering hill climb in a Mercedes 2-litre supercharged racing car.

Other career highlights include a victory in the Bleichröder race in 1925 and class wins in the Nürburgring opening race, the Freiburger Bergrekord and the Klausenpass race in 1927, in each case in the 2-litre eight-cylinder racing car, and two years later winning the Internationale Alpenfahrt, again with Mercedes-Benz. In 1928, he won the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in a Mercedes-Benz SS together with Rudolf Caracciola, and the following year he won the International Alpine Drive in a Stuttgart 260.
