Wilhelm Werner, a native of Großgartach near Heilbronn, joined Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) as an assembler in 1895. Just the following year, he moved in this capacity – and also as a driver with one of the first Daimler vehicles – to the Vienna branch of his employer. In 1898, he entered a Daimler Viktoria in the first Dolomite drive, which he won together with his co-driver Wilhelm Bauer. From 1899, Werner was in the service of Baron Alfred Springer.

He became world famous for his successes at the Nice Race Week, in particular the Nice - La Turbie race in March 1901, which he won with the new Mercedes 35 hp. In 1902, he took a position as chauffeur and racing driver for US millionaire Clarence Gray Dinsmore. Under the latter's banner, in September of that year he won the 4th Semmering race in a Mercedes-Simplex 40 hp. After Dinsmore's death in November 1905, Werner transferred to the service of Kaiser Wilhelm II as head chauffeur. After the end of the First World War and the abdication of the Kaiser, Werner worked at the DMG branch in Berlin.
