Hailing from Reggio di Calabria, Zehender first competed in racing events in 1925. At the wheel of an O.M. Superba and later a Chrysler, he demonstrated promising talent and subsequently switched to various racing and sports cars made by Alfa Romeo, Bugatti and Maserati. After equally encouraging results, which did not go unnoticed by Alfred Neubauer, the Italian was appointed to the Mercedes-Benz reserve drivers' squad for the 1936 and 1937 seasons.

As a rule, he was overshadowed by the great stars of those days, but for once he moved into the spotlight of the Grand Prix scene. Zehender was given an entry in the 1937 Monaco Grand Prix and expressed his thanks with a respectable fifth place in the W 125. Two years later – after a stint as a works driver for Maserati – the Italian ended his career. After the war, he still took part in a few races, for example the Mille Miglia in 1953 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1956, but failed to finish in either case.
