After WWII, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” - often referred to as a design icon – stood for elegance and sportiness like no other car of its time. The 300 SL designed by Friedrich Geiger not only fascinated the public at its launch in 1954 due to its gullwing doors, which had to be included for construction-related reasons, but it was also the first Mercedes-Benz road car without a vertical radiator grille. Instead, there is a horizontal air intake with the Mercedes star in the centre – a design element which can be seen in many Mercedes-Benz models even today.
