    The new Mercedes-Benz S-class
Fuel consumption reduced by 13 to 17%
With the new Mercedes-Benz S-class, the motor manufacturer with the longest tradition in the world is confirming its role as a pioneer in the production of top-of-the-range luxury class saloons. The range comprises two bodywork versions with short and long wheelbase (2965 and 3085 millimetres) and, at the time of production start-up, three engine variants with six and eight cylinders. The power spectrum of these engines runs from 165 kW/224 hp in the S 320 up to 225 kW/306 hp in the V8version (S 500). A 12-cylinder engine and two high-torque diesel engines with common-rail direct injection will complete the range in the course of 1999. Thanks to the three-valves-per-cylinder configuration, dual ignition and advanced lightweight design, the engines of the new S-class consume between 13 and 17% less fuel in the European driving test than the engines of the predecessor model.
