Mercedes-Benz 280 E saloon of the 123 series on the test site in Untertürkheim, 1977.
Novel test methods and equipment create the conditions for perfecting active safety in future automobiles even further than before.
For example, in order to be able to study the reactions of the driver and the car immediately before an accident situation with a pedestrian, "cardboard dummies" are made to cross the road unexpectedly in front of unsuspecting drivers on the Daimler-Benz test track. A drive recorder installed in the trunk records all important data such as driving speed, steering wheel movements, accelerator pedal position, brake pressure, etc. until the vehicle comes to a standstill.
With this sophisticated test device, which was developed in-house and can be seen for the first time at the Innovation Fair in Hanover, Daimler-Benz is breaking completely new ground in accident research. Even the first series of tests have already yielded valuable findings for future developments.
