Right from the start, Carl Benz focuses on the development of the automobile. In the three-wheeled Benz-patented motorcar of 1886, the complete drive unit with a one-cylinder engine, shafting, differential and axle drive are located in the rear of an also entirely newly constructed tubular steel frame. Carl Benz files a patent application for his "vehicle powered by a gas engine" and continues to quickly further develop it.
