In 1952, Mercedes-Benz returns to racing. The brand enjoys great success with the 300 SL sports prototype in 1952, among others the victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the double victory at the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico (photo), the toughest long-distance race of any type in the world. Later, steel bars were added to protect the windscreen from the elements and animals after the car of the Kling/Klenk team had hit a vulture.
