Based on the 424 series, the 427 series replaced the preceding series from 1988. Externally almost unchanged, the model series was technically modernised and equipped with the new engine generation, the OM 366 series, which replaced the OM 352 in the Unimog. Up to 2003 a total of 16,401 units were produced in 13 model variants.
