In 1999 AMG presents the most powerful of its road vehicles at that time: the SL 73 AMG with 386 kW/525 hp performance. At this point in time the roadster was the unrivalled leader in the small, exclusive segment of open super sports cars. The SL 73 AMG needs just 4.8 seconds to accelerate to 100 kmh (62 mph); the maximum speed is 250 or 300 kmh (155 or 186 mph) depending on customer requirements.

Even today the AMG 7.3 litre V12 engine impresses with its technical data: a stroke of 80.2 millimetres a cylinder bore of 92.4 millimetres delivers a considerable volume of 7,291 cubic centimetres. It also develops powerful torque: at 4000 revs/min it achieves a generous 750 Newton-metres. Throughout the entire engine speed range more than 600 Newton-metres are available. The AMG high-performance engine is fundamentally modified compared to the 290 kW/394 hp, V12 basic engine of the SL 600; also the complete transmission, including five-speed automatic gearbox, is adapted to cope with the increased power available.
