Trucks with short hood replace the traditional design

  • Description
Daimler-Benz presents three truck models in the new semi-forward control vehicle design to the press in Stuttgart: in the medium-duty class the L 322 and the L 327 export model from Mannheim production, and the heavy-duty L 337 built in Gaggenau. This marks the beginning of a drive to phase out the traditional truck design. As with the outgoing models, a cab-over-engine variant is also available for each model.

Length and weight restrictions lead to a new orientation for commercial vehicles in the second half of the 1950s. The result is the short-nosed truck, where the engine extends into the cab a little, thereby saving length in the front section. The centimetres gained are fully utilised for the body length, leading to more cargo area and more value per trip. The light Mercedes-Benz short-nosed truck starting at 10.5 tonnes is initially built in Mannheim as the 323, 328, and 322.
