In November 1895, motorsport also began in the USA, but got off to a somewhat bumpy start. The first automobile race in America took place on the 151-kilometre Chicago - Waukegan - Chicago route. As in France, the initiator was once again a newspaper. Despite enormous interest and almost 100 registrations, the Chicago Times-Herald Contest had to be postponed from 2 to 28 November due to the short time between the announcement and the start, after it became apparent that numerous participants would not be able to complete their vehicles in time.

To keep the public interested, the event on the original date was changed to the Chicago Times-Herald Expo Run. In the end, only two participants took part after the majority had either not been able to complete their preparations or wanted to spare their vehicles for the actual contest. Apart from Oscar Mueller in a Benz Vis-à-Vis, only James Frank Duryea started in his own design. After an accident involving Duryea, Mueller was the only one to cross the finish line in his Benz after 8 hours and 44 minutes.
