Although born in Wels, Austria, Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe became a German citizen in 1919 and made a name for himself from the mid-1920s as a racing driver in Mercedes, Mercedes-Benz and later BMW. The aristocrat was quickly given the nickname "Prince Sause" ("Party Prince") and won, for example, the Arlberg race in 1925 in a Mercedes, on the Tauern-, Semmering and again the Arlberg race in 1927 in a Mercedes-Benz, as well as the Ecce Homo mountain test. At the 1927 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, he was on the grid as a works driver for the Mercedes-Benz team alongside his brand colleague Rudolf Caracciola, but failed to finish in his Model S.

Even after the end of his driving career, Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe was still involved in motorsport and served, for example, as a board member of the Supreme National Sports Commission for Automobile Sport in Germany (ONS). He was also involved in the re-foundation of the Automobile Club of Germany (AvD) after the war and the founding of the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club (ÖAMTC).
