The Mercedes-Benz S type is developed in 1927. 146 units are made until the phase-out of production in September 1928. Not all cars can be immediately sold, thus the S type still appears on pricelists even until 1930 and is sold from stock. This is nothing out of the ordinary at the time as chassis are often retained on stock to enable body builders to make a tailor-made body upon customer request. The touring car body is slightly drawn down behind the windscreen to allow the driver and co-driver to get on and off quickly during motorsports competitions. The back seats are designed for short trips rather and are thus accessible through a traditional, slim door.
