This Swede was a regular co-driver for Björn Waldegård in the European Rally Championship since 1970 and in the World Rally Championship from 1973. From 1979 onwards, the duo was part of Mercedes-Benz's successful line-up of SLC Coupés for selected rounds of the World Rally Championship.

In their debut year, Waldegård/Thorszelius finished sixth in the Safari Rally in Kenya and took second place in the Bandama Rally Cȏte d'Ivoire, both in a 450 SLC 5.0. The following year, after finishing fourth in the Portugal Rally and sixth in the Motogard Rally New Zealand, the team won the Bandama Rally Cȏte d'Ivoire, its last factory event with the large coupés, this time in a 500 SLC.
