This trained technical draughtsman came from the Danish municipality of Vojens, started his career in karting in 1974 and already won the Danish national championship the following year. In 1978, he moved up to Formula Ford and, by 1981, had fought his way into Formula 3, firstly in the British Championship, then in the European Championship and finally in the German equivalent, which he won in 1984.

After having to sit out the 1985 season due to a chronic lack of money, he switched from formula racing to the German Touring Car Championship, among other things, and secured the Rover title at the first attempt in 1986 before driving an Alfa Romeo in 1987 without any success.

From mid-1988, Thiim drove a Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 DTM for the then AMG team at initially four DTM race weekends and attracted attention with good finishes, including two podium places. At the start of the 1989 season, he became a regular driver in the German Touring Car Championship and from then on was always behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz.

The Dane finished his first full season in fourth place overall, and in 1990 he came third. The highlight was 1992, when – now driving for Team Zakspeed – he finished the championship in second place in the drivers' standings at the wheel of an AMG-Mercedes 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II DTM behind his brand colleague Klaus Ludwig.

After the end of the DTM/ITC era, Thiim was involved in a wide range of championships and racing formats from 1997 until the end of his active career in 2013, with a liking for endurance tests such as the 24-hour races at the Nürburgring, Spa and Dubai.
