Born in Geneva, with Italian and Swiss citizenship, he got into motorsport relatively late, at the age of 13. When he ended his time in karting in 2005, without being able to show any spectacular successes up to that point, he was nevertheless offered the chance to move up to the Italian Formula Renault the following year and to compete in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 at the same time.

Especially in the former, Mortara proved his talent and already finished his rookie season in fourth place overall. This success secured him a starting place in the Formula 3 Euro Series for the next two seasons, where he held his own under intense competitive pressure and, after finishing eighth overall in 2007, fought his way to the runner-up spot the following year.

Immediately afterwards, Mortara started in eight of the eleven rounds of the GP2 Asia Series held during the winter half of the year and finished eleventh in the final standings. He followed this up almost seamlessly with a full GP2 season in 2009, but with only one win in the sprint race at the Circuit de Catalunya and a handful of places up front, he had to settle for fourteenth in the final standings.

In the same year, he also got a taste of the air in the then Formula Renault 3.5 in four races and managed a sixth place in the last of his entries. In 2010, Mortara again contested a full season of the Formula 3 Euro Series and won the title with a superior points lead. This ended his career as a formula driver for the time being, and he turned to the German Touring Car Masters.

Here, he became active for Audi in 2011 and 2012 and achieved fifth place in the drivers' championship in the last of the two years. Highlights during this time included two wins for his employer in the FIA World GT Cup in Macau, and Mortara also fulfilled his obligations as a test driver for the Lotus F1 Team in 2012.

After the end of this engagement, things were no longer going well for the Geneva-born driver in the DTM either: in 2013, he slipped to penultimate place in the drivers' standings with his Audi. Individual starts in US GT racing were hardly less depressing. The only bright spot remained his third consecutive victory in the FIA GT World Cup on the streets of Macau.

in 2014, however, Mortara returned to the DTM in a stronger position and moved up to fifth place in the drivers' standings – still under contract to Audi. A result that he improved by one place in the following season despite additional GT racing assignments. 2016 became his strongest DTM year, when he was runner-up in the drivers' competition, beaten by an extremely narrow margin.

After this success and six years at Audi, Mortara switched to HWA for the 2017 season and compete in the C 63 DTM. While he was still quite discreet in his debut year for Mercedes with only a third place in the  Sunday race at the Norisring, he ended the brand's farewell year in sixth position in the drivers' standings with two race wins, two second places and one third place.

In addition to his involvement in the DTM, Mortara competed in FIA Formula E for the first time in the 2017/18 season for the Venturi team. He remained loyal to the Monegasque team in the following years and achieved his first victory at the Hong Kong ePrix 2019 – at the same time the first victory for the team. At the end of the season, he was 14th with 52 points after another podium finish in the drivers' championship. He also occupied this position in the following year. He was runner-up in 2021 and finished third in 2022, with four victories that season putting him at the top of the podium more times than any other driver in the series.
