Born in Stuttgart, Rainer Günzler, a journalist in radio and television, led a life between the microphone as a commentator, the desk as a journalist and dusty rally trails, where he accompanied drivers like Karl Kling, Hans Herrmann and Paul Frère in the co-driver's seat. With Kling, for example, he won the 14,000-kilometre Marathon Rally Mediterranée - Le Cap in 1959 in a Mercedes-Benz 190 D – a success that they both repeated two years later in a 220 SE at the Algiers-Central Africa Rally. In the same year, Günzler, as co-driver of Hans Herrmann, also in a 220 SE, finished the Touring Road Prix of Argentina in second place overall.
