This Swede was one of the most famous co-drivers in world rallying and only ended his great international career in 1999. As co-driver for the Finn Hannu Mikkola, he was part of the Mercedes-Benz works team in 1979 and 1980, which competed for victories and top positions with the large SLC Coupés in some particularly prestigious races of the World Rally Championship.

In the 1979 season, for example, Mikkola/Hertz won the Bandama Cȏte d'Ivoire Rally ahead of three other Mercedes-Benz teams in a 450 SLC 5.0. In the same year, the duo took second place in the Safari Rally in Kenya. In 1980, Mikkola/Hertz took second place in a 500 SLC in the Rally Codasur in Argentina and third place in the Motogard Rally in New Zealand.

After the Mercedes-Benz team withdrew from rallying, the Finnish-Swedish pairing started racing for Audi in 1981.
