Born in The Hague, Huisman started out in his father's business at a young age, working as a salesman in the paper industry. He began his successful career as a professional racing driver by winning the Dutch Touring Car Championship in 1991. From this point onwards, he initially competed exclusively with Porsche and, among other things, won the GT class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999. He won the Porsche Supercup a total of four times in a row.

In the 2001 and 2002 seasons, he competed in the DTM with an AMG-Mercedes CLK-DTM for Manthey Racing. In his debut year, Huisman finished a respectable sixth overall after third places at the Sachsenring and the second Nürburgring race.

2002, on the other hand, was disappointing and Huisman remained without points. After the first two DTM races in 2003, which he completed in a CLK-DTM of Team Rosberg, the Dutchman returned to the Porsche Supercup.
