Peter Lang, born in Stuttgart, is the son of Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix star Hermann Lang and his wife Lydia. After his apprenticeship at Daimler-Benz in the 1960s, he studied business administration in Nuremberg and Fribourg, Switzerland. Subsequently, Lang worked for Daimler-Benz from 1971 to 1998 in the sales audit department.

In his younger years, between 1962 and 1964, he took part in circuit races and rallies in a Mercedes-Benz. Thus, together with Eugen Böhringer in a 220 SE, he won the Acropolis Rally and the Poland Rally in 1962.

In the same year, both of them, also in 220 SEs, took second places in the Monte-Carlo Rally and the Germany Rally. In 1963, Lang finished third in the 6-hour race at the Nürburgring together with Erich Waxenberger in a 300 SE and the following year fourth in the 6-hour race at Brands Hatch, this time with Hans Herrmann at the wheel of the 300 SE. As co-driver for Dieter Glemser, Lang also achieved third place in the 1964 Portugal Rally, also in a 300 SE.
