Born in Bremen, Krages was better known by his pseudonym "John Winter", which he used throughout his racing career. The entrepreneur's son began his career in 1976 in a Porsche 911. He remained loyal to the brand for more than two decades, winning a large number of races in GT and Group C prototype racing during this time. His most significant successes included victories in the 24-hour races at Le Mans in 1985 and Daytona in 1991.

in 1992, Krages made a radical change and competed in four races of the German Touring Car Championship season in a Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II DTM of the Zakspeed team. His results, however, remained modest.

Although increasingly preoccupied by the economic problems of his timber trading company, he made a second attempt in the DTM with Opel in 1994, which resulted in 16th place in the final drivers' standings.

In 1995, Krages got a place at Zakspeed again and drove an AMG Mercedes C-Class DTM. With three championship points, he finished the season in 23rd and penultimate place overall. After that it became quiet around Krages. On 11 January 2001, he was found shot dead in Atlanta/USA, the investigators suspecting suicide due to massive financial difficulties.
