Born in Einsiedeln in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland, Fässler laid the foundation for his career at the young age of 7 in karting. There, he went through various classes until 1993 and then switched to the French junior development team for further training, where he was honoured as Rookie of the Year in 1996 after finishing third in the French Formule Renault.  After two years in French Formula 3, he switched to its German counterpart and finished the 1999 season in second place in the final standings with the Bemani team.

in 2000, he drove for AMG-Mercedes in the DTM and finished his debut season in a respectable fourth place. in 2001, Fässler celebrated his first championship victory in the third DTM round at Oschersleben. in 2002, he was successful in Spielberg, Austria, and in the following season he was able to repeat his previous year's victory on the A1 Ring in Spielberg, in addition to three second places and one third place. He finished third in the overall standings.

For the 2004 season, he switched to Opel. From 2006, he shifted his activities to endurance racing and was able to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times in 2011, 2012 and 2014 in Audi. in 2013, he also achieved overall victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring.
