Between 1988 and 1990, he competed in Group C for Mercedes-Benz and celebrated a series of outstanding successes. Victories in the 1988 season at Jerez and Spa-Francorchamps in a Sauber-Mercedes C 9 were followed by successes (with Schlesser) at Suzuka and with Kenny Acheson at Brands Hatch and Spa-Francorchamps in 1989. With six victories, also in Sauber-Mercedes C 9s, Baldi secured the Group C sports car world championship title at the end of the 1990 season together with his French team-mate Jean-Louis Schlesser.

In 1991 and 1992, he finished third in the drivers' championship with the Peugeot Talbot team and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1994 driving a Porsche. In 1998, he achieved overall victory in the 12-hour race at Sebring in a Ferrari, in which he continued to compete until 2002.
