The Mannheim native joined Benz & Cie. as an apprentice in April 1889, where he was employed in the technical office for two years and in the factory for a further two years. He was subsequently employed in carriage delivery and customer service and, after completing his military service, from June 1898 as a foreman in the assembly department for smaller vehicles.

In 1899, 1900 and then again in 1906, Bender made a name for himself in motor racing, for example by winning the Berlin - Baumgartenbrück - Berlin race in 1899 and the Frankfurt am Main International Track Race at the end of July 1900. As co-driver, Mathias Bender won the Mannheim - Pforzheim - Mannheim long-distance race with Fritz Held in Benz 16 hp racing cars in the same year.

Between 1901 and 1903, Bender worked for Benz & Cie. in London and then took over the company's Mannheim repair workshop, which he ran until his retirement in July 1931.
