Born in Ludwigsburg, Braungart took part in a motorsport event for the first time in 1960 – in the passenger seat on the occasion of the Künzelsau reliability drive. He celebrated great successes as a member of the Mercedes-Benz team – also in the role of co-driver – together with Dieter Glemser.

With him, he won the overall classification of the Rally Poland in 1963 and took second place in both the Rally Germany and the Touring Grand Prix of Argentina. In 1964, he achieved the same success in this South American marathon event, again as Glemser's companion in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE.

After completing his engineering studies in the field of automotive technology, his career led him to managerial positions at well-known companies in the German automotive industry.
